In my house growing up “Silent Cal Coolidge” was revered and respected President. My father is fond of reminding me that a few well chosen words can have more of an impact than a long flowery oratory. In that vein there are two humerus stories of Coolidge’s succinct style that have been oft repeated in my house.
During a state dinner, Dorothy Parker knowing of Coolidge’s reputation for few words said, “Mr. Coolidge, I’ve made a bet against a fellow who said it was impossible to get more than two words out of you”
Coolidge’s reply – “You Loose”.
The other story has Mrs. Coolidge not feeling well, so President Coolidge went to church without her. When he came back, Mrs. Coolidge tried to find out what happened at the service.
“Did you enjoy the service?”.
“What was the sermon about?”
“For heaven’s sake Cal, what did the preacher say about sin?”
“He was against it”
